A member of the Zubair Family has explained why singer Evelyn Lagu (Evelyn Nakabira) collapsed a day before her maiden concert.
The concert dubbed An Evening With Evelyn Dinner was tipped to take place on June 2, at Muganzi Lwazza in Katwe, a city suburb.
The Zubair Family, a movie production group led by Moses Bbosa Sserunkuma, had offered to help in planning and managing it.
The group, whose offices are located at Muganzi Lwazza, is known for its drama series such as Namujinga, Ekiraamo, and Kiguli Ne Doctor.
Lagu has been taking acting roles under the group.
According to Sserunkuma, the artiste was shocked to find out that her concert had been cancelled, thus collapsing.
“We were trying to explain to her that the show may not be held because of some circumstances and she could not contain it,” he said.
Sserunkuma explained that the cancellation came after the owner of the venue demanded that they pay sh8m before organising the concert yet they didn’t have the money.
“The landlady was demanding some money, so we paid about sh13m last month. However, she still needed some more sh8m, which we didn’t have. The show was organised to raise some money for Evelyn’s (Lagu) treatment because she has to be on lifetime dialysis and, therefore, she has to look for money to pay for that treatment,” he said.
Lil Pazo, Lagu’s close friend, told journalists on June 2 that doctors at Malcolm Hospital in Kampala said she was not yet fit to receive visitors.
“She was rushed to Malcolm Hospital and we tried to check on her, but the doctors said she still needs some rest,” he said.
Lagu, who is known for songs like Mbulira, Sikyatya and Ogumanga, has been battling kidney problems for a number of years.
