URA impounds 738 cartons of banned bleaching products

Uganda Revenue Authority enforcement has today impounded 738 cartons of banned bleaching aids containing banned materials.

According to the Authority, the skin lightening cosmetics that contained mercury and hydroquinone that were banned in the country.

In 2001 Government banned the importation of skin lightening cosmetics that contain mercury and hydroquinone.

The ban was meant to protect Ugandans from the various dangerous side effects that come with the components that range from skin disorders to cancer.

The Authority said the items were recovered after two simultaneous operations that involved a raid on a Makindye based consolidation den and a highway interception of a truck in Mukono.

Some of the banned bleaching cosmetics include Uniderm Soap, Rico Soap, Mekako Soap, Top Claire Plus Lotion, Beauty Lotion, Mekako Cream, Cocodum, Claire Cream, Fair & White Lightening Cream and Lady Claire Soap among others.
