Sipapa, wife further remanded over sh1.6b robbery

City socialite Charles Olim aka Sipapa and his wife Shamilah Nakiyimba have been further remanded over sh1.6b belonging to a South Sudan national.

On Monday, Makindye Chief Magistrate Esther Adikin remanded the couple until October 10 after State Attorney Hope Rukundo said investigations in the matter are still going on.

Procedurally, the state is allowed 180 days to carry on its investigations as the matter is placed under the magistrate’s court for mention.

Once the investigations are completed, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is required to prepare the committal papers to have the accused committed to the High Court to stand trial.

In case, the investigations go on for more than 180-days, the accused is entitled to mandatory bail pending investigations.

Prosecution alleges Olim, his wife and others still at large on the night of August 29, 2022, at Bunga-Kawuka, Makindye division in Kampala district robbed Jacob Mul Arok of $429,000.

On the same date, the duo also allegedly robbed the Sudanese national of a silver blue iPhone valued at $3,200 (about sh12.2m) and a Samsung flat screen television set of 75-inches valued at $4,000 (sh15.3m), among others.

The couple, according to the prosecution, immediately before and after the robbery used a substance on Arok, which rendered him unconscious.

The duo is also accused of robbing Mary Ateng, Abig Yar and James Manyok of two Apple laptops, a DELL laptop and gold jewellery among others.

Last week, the duo was arraigned in court and were consequently remanded over the charge.

Aggravated robbery is contrary to section 285 of the Penal Code Act and elicits a maximum sentence of death on conviction.
