Police probe elderly man’s death after bar brawl

The Police in Rukungiri are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of a 70-year-old man who died on Sunday August 21, 2022 morning after an altercation in a bar the previous day.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, identified the deceased as Geoffrey Kibiiri.

He said they had arrested four suspects; Blair Ahabyoona, Peter Twinamatsiko, Hillary Muramuzi  and Mukama Niwenyesiga Mukama, all residents of Buhunga Sub County to assist them with investigations over the incident.

“It’s alleged that on Saturday August 20, 2022 at around 6:00pm the deceased Geoffrey Kibiiri a resident of Kibura village, Bwanda Parish, Buhunga subcounty   Rukungiri district left his home to Canon bar located at an approximately distance of around 200 Meters from his home to drink alcohol,” Maate explained.

He said at around 11:00 pm on the same day, he returned home drunk claiming that a group of  unidentified people waylaid and assaulted him on return.

“On Sunday August 21, 2022 at around 7:00 am, he became very ill and was rushed to a clinic at Omukagando trading center where he died. The incident was reported at Buhunga police station and a case of murder preferred,” Maate said.

He noted that the secondary scene at his home was visited and documented by the District Criminal Investigation Directorate Officer and team.

“The body was taken to Rwakabengo health center III for Postmortem to ascertain the actual cause of death,” Maate said
