Parliament has directed the lands minister to investigate allegations of land eviction by the director of operations at Operation Wealth Creation and fashion designer, Sylvia Owori.
This was after Tororo Woman MP Sarah Opendi presented a petition in Parliament alleging that Owori is claiming ownership of 90 acres of land in Nyakesi zone, Nyangole sub-county in Tororo district.
The land reportedly belongs to 244 residents and they allege that they are living in fear, intimidation and constant violent attacks from Awori’s security personnel and agents.
Opendi told the House chaired by Speaker Anita Among that Owori has blocked people from accessing the school and church located in the area.
“The petitioners have sought for assistance from this land grabber, but to no avail. Her security personnel have beaten up people and now they have come seeking for Parliament’s intervention to rescue them from land grabbers,” she said.
Among directed that the lands minister establishes what exactly was happening on the ground and also puts temporary measures to stop security personnel from beating people.
She also asked the committee on physical infrastructure to handle the matter.
