Douglas Matovu, the newly-elected Kampala International University (KIU) Western Campus guild president, has died in an accident that occurred at Bulwadda, Gomba on Ssembabule Road, in Kabulasoke sub-county, Gomba district.

The accident happened at around 3:00 am when a lorry registration number UBG 770D heading towards Kampala, rammed into a Toyota Noah UBH 572H, also headed in the same direction.

Matovu, a second-year pharmacy student died on the spot while five other occupants escaped with serious injuries.

The deceased’s body was conveyed to Gombe Hospital mortuary in Butambala while the injured victims were taken to Gombe Hospital and Mulago Hospital in Kampala.

The Police arrested the truck driver identified as Sadat Sseruga, 29, and he is currently detained at Kanoni Police Station, while the wreckages were towed to Kanoni Police Station, in Gomba district.

Lydia Tumushabe, the Katonga regional Police publicist, said they are still investigating the cause of the deadly accident.

The Katonga regional Police command recently warned motorists and other road users to take serious precautions while using the route after crashes were reported to be on the rise.

Tumushabe in a statement released last week, cautioned the road users to exercise discipline while using the Mpigi-Kanoni-Sembabule route which is currently being used by people heading to Masaka and areas of western Uganda following the temporary closure of a section of the Masaka-Kampala Highway after River Katonga burst its banks and the bridge caved in.

Several accidents, most of which are hit-and-runs, have been reported on the route, which prompted the Police to close all roadside markets and also station Traffic Police officers on the known hotspots to clamp down on errant road users.
