Many have remembered and described Gen. Elly Tumwine, a four star general, who passed away on August 25, as a war hero who lost his eye in the struggle to liberate Uganda in a war that brought in the NRA/M government.
Yet, he was much more than that. He was also a fashion designer and model.
In the 2000s, when the defunct Club Silk in Industrial Area, Kampala used to host a monthly Fashion Nite, Tumwine was quite the hit.

Whenever he was hosted, he attracted a different kind of crowd to silk, made of fellow soldiers, politicians and other technocrats. He would get onto the catwalk and walk for his own designs.
At one point, he had Gen. David Sejusa walk for him. At such moments, the club would be filled with laughter, as such surprise models fumbled on the catwalk. It always helped that the runway then was a short one.
