Former deputy speaker  Anita Among has been elected the new speaker of the 11th Parliament replacing the late Jacob Oulanyah.

During elections held at Kololo Independence Grounds, Anita Among made a clean sweep scoring 401 votes against 66 of the opposition’s Asuman Basalirwa.   By press time, elections for the deputy speaker were going on

The elections took place at Kololo airstrip and were presided over by Chief Justice Owiny Dollo and attended by President Yoweri Museveni.

In her acceptance speech, Anita Among notably said,” I’ll be a Speaker for the whole Uganda and everybody, not for the party (NRM). I pledge to support all members of Parliament in their respective constituencies for you to remain in Parliament”

Her opponent Asuman Basalirwa was gracious in defeat.  “I congratulate Hon Anita Among. The process has been open, free and democratic. Unlike other processes known to this country, this particular one has been free and fair. I’m available if you think I can add value to this country,” he said
