The Police on Friday, June 3, said they had arrested 34 suspects in Namugongo, in Kiira Municipality, Wakiso district as they continued providing security to thousands of pilgrims who had thronged the area.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said they had registered a few cases ranging from theft of phones, stealing from a motor vehicle and indecent assault.
“As the joint task teams continue to safeguard pilgrims at Namugongo for today’s June 3, 2022 Martyrs Day celebrations, we are also registering more people arriving at the Anglican and Catholic shrines. However, some of these are wrong elements. We have so far registered four cases of theft of phones, one of stealing from a motor vehicle and one of indecent assault at the Anglican Shrine,” Owoyesigyire said.
He said at the Catholic shrine, they had recorded more cases.
“Meanwhile, at the Catholic shrine, we have registered 36 cases (35 thefts and one of issuing counterfeit currency). We have arrested 34 suspects and they are detained at Kira Division Police Station,” he added.
The Police thanked the pilgrims for following the security guidelines and being peaceful.
“We want to assure the members of the public that we will continue to safeguard them as they celebrate Martyrs Day,” Owoyesigyire promised.
